JAWAAN (2023) : review

Image
And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted ...

DURGAMATI (2020): Review

Image
Directed by: Ashok  Cast: Jishu Sengupta, Bhumi Pednekar, Arshad Warsi, Mahie Gill, Anant Mahadevan, Karan Kapadia, Amit Bahl and others.  What did I just watch? Still trying to figure out what was happening in this alleged supernatural thriller. Supposed to be an amazon prime original which is remake of a South Indian hit, original remake anyone? Phew !! It’s nothing more than cinematic torture on screen.  The so called original story is based in Madhya Pradesh (beautiful location selected) where an IAS officer who’s also a murder convict is subjected to severe interrogation in an isolated apparent haunted Haveli. Sounds weird? If you watch the on screen proceedings then calling it weird would be an understatement. Things get complex when the accused gets possessed by the ghost of a slain queen who in some bygone era ruled that kingdom. Wow so original!  With a foolishly developed concept like that along with some idiotic political angle thrown in this is severe men...

RAGINI MMS 2 Revisited (2014 article)

Image
Well, I penned the below review way back in 2014, can’t remember much about this surprise box office hit except the babydoll song and a creepy dialogue ‘Mee Chetkin Naahi Mee Mazhya Mulaana Naahi Maarla’ !! Not sure if I would review this horror- sex- comedy in similar fashion today, but it’s non orgasmic pleasure revisiting an old review, Happy Halloween 🎃  Ragini MMS 2:  Director: Bhooshan Patel  Cast: Sunny Leone, Sahil Prem, Divya Datta, Parvin Dabbas, Sandhya Mridul, Annapurna, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Sonia Mehra, Anita Hasanandani, Karan Mehra and others.  The horror genre of bollywood has never generated any curiosity among the viewers but here the lead actress may drag the crowd to the theatres !  B Grade film maker Rocks (Parvin Dabbas) plans to direct a "horrex"(yeah its horror +sex) at a haunted house where the original Ragini MMS scandal took place 3 years ago. The entire cast and crew shifts to the creepy villa and the lead actress(Sunny Leone playin...

RETRO BOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN

Image
RETRO BOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN : with Halloween fever round the corner, revisiting five retro horror movies from the Ramsay house that deserve a reviewing.  Guest House (1980): set in a chilling hill station with a spooky guest house at its premise, there’s a chopped hand on a killing spree that keeps the cops on a hot trail. The murder count keeps increasing and the lead hero joins the investigation. Chilling, mysterious and deadly! Ramsay’s in their great form, with veteran Premnath lending his ‘hand’ along with Vijendra Ghatge and the voluptuous Padmini Kapila adding some spark. Bappi Lahiri added some melodious non disco music to the horror proceedings.  Cast/ Vijendra Ghatge, Prem Kishen, Padmini Kapila, Premnath, Madhu Kapoor, Komilla Virk, Narendranath, Neelam Mehra & others.  Hotel (1981): what happens when a group of selfish builders build an hotel on a cemetery? The spirits rise and how ! The hotel gets haunted and the occupants run for their lives, with appari...

The lead actor faces this uncomfortably dangerous situation in this horror webseries.  A special squad is assigned inorder to evacuate a village, unknowingly they end up reactivating a battalion of British zombies who ruled that location centuries ago. Thereafter begins a blood soaked violent battle between the living and the dead, with survival of the fittest.  The director is known for his earlier horror attempt Ghoul(2018) which didn’t quite cut the ice with viewers, with Betaal he tries mixing age old Indian myth with a contempora...
