JAWAAN (2023) : review

Image
And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted ...

THE LAST HOUR (2021) Review

Image
Directed by: Amit Kumar  Streaming on: Amazon prime video  Cast: Sanjay Kapoor, Karma Takapa, Shaylee Krishen, Shahana Goswami, Robin Tamang, Mandakini, Raima Sen, Lanuakom Ao, Debashish Lama, Tenzein Choden, and others  What’s the best location for a supernatural murder mystery? Nope not a Ramsay brother Haveli, it’s a foggy misty hill station that can give you the chills and the thrills. How I wish the direction was as thrilling and chilling here. Sigh.  A Mumbai based investigations officer is relocated to the north eastern Indian region, he soon gets assigned the task to track down the culprits behind the rape and murder of a tourist who was a Bengali film star. The murders do not stop there, and the officer (played by Sanjay Kapoor) soon realises it’s a pretty complicated mystery to crack down. A young Shaman (what’s that? Google and you’ll get a detailed description of these mysterious people who can travel in the middle world along with spirits) helps the off...

DRISHYAM 2 (2021) Review

Image
DRISHYAM 2 (2021) directed by: Jeetu Joseph Cast: Mohanlal, Meena, Siddiqui, Asha Sarath, Ansiba, Esther, Murali Gopi, Dinesh Prabhakar, Anjali Nair, Joy Mathew, Ajith Kothhatukulum, Anish Menon, Antony Premabavur, Ganesh Kumar & others.  The prequel was remade in multiple languages and a major hit almost in all, the Hindi version even resulted in hilarious memes at that time, this sequel is by far one of the best executed thriller scoring high in impeccably perfect continuity.  Malayalam cinema has certainly spread its creative wings and risen much above its other counterparts in the country by delving Deep into complex subjects specially in the mystery genre. While Drishyam had an super impressive crime premise, the sequel deals with the aftermath, the story progresses six years further dealing with the undercover investigation hunting the missing boy’s body/skeleton and the investigating officer’s relentless trials to put Georgekutty (Mohanlal) behind the bars.  ...

JL50 (2020): Review

Image
JL50 (2020)  Directed by: Shailendra Vyas  Cast: Pankaj Kapur, Abhay Deol, Piyush Mishra, Ritika Anand, Rajesh Singh and others.  Sonyliv has been streaming some amazing series from the past one year with Scam 1992 topping the favourite charts almost everywhere. JL50 is an sci-fi series. Considering the four episodes with each averaging to about 35 mins each it can well be a feature film converted to web-series.  In 2019 a plane crashes into a valley, it’s got mysterious undertones considering the plane had departed for its journey way back in 1984 and had mysteriously disappeared into thin air. The sudden emergence of this lost plane after 35 years causes a sudden psychological tremor for the investigators.  With all the crew members and passengers dead and only two survivors who luckily survived because they were in the cockpit that crashed atop a hill, one the pilot and other, a strange and mysterious man with murderous eyes. The pilot claims she belongs to ...

Paurashpur(2021): Web Series Review

Image
Directed by: Sachindra Vats  Cast: Annu Kapoor, Shilpa Shinde, Milind Soman, Sahil Salathia, Poulomi Das, Anant Joshi, Rajesh Tripathy, Flora Saini, Shaheer Sheikh and others.  Once upon a time in a kingdom there lived a virile king who married multiple times, but his bride would disappear after their much sleazily filmed Suhaag Raat ! Then there’s a hunt for those brides, that’s the basic plot of this ‘period’ web-series which appears more like a film converted into OTT series considering the 2.26 hours length.  And you thank your stars for that length! It’s nothing less than a torture to watch this beautiful trash wherein the producer (the great Ekta Kapoor) dishes out just about any crap in the name of cinematic liberty. Worse, you’ve audience that lap up these shenanigans. Just why?  The director or perhaps it’s the powerful producer’s insistence that they rely entirely on various angles of the female anatomy in-order to attract viewers. Each and every female ch...
