JAWAAN (2023) : review

Image
And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted ...

Great Grand Masti: Invitation to Headache

Great Grand Masti  [2016]

Director: Indra Kumar

Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Ritesh Deshmukh, Aftaab Shivadasani, Urvashi Rautela, Shreyas Talpade, Sudesh Lahiri, Sanjay Mishra, Usha Nadkarni, Mishti Chakravarti, Shraddha Das, Puja Banerjee, Sonali Raut, Kangana Sharma, Kedar Karande.

The Masti Franchise is back and the irritating trio of Amar/Prem/Meet are presenting triple the fun considering its the third installment In the Masti series hence the director has three major genres clubbed into one viz; Comedy /Horror/ Sex.

Three friends whom the viewers are already familiar with thanks to the roaring success of the first two installments, come together & realise all three are leading a bland and sex deprived life due to interfering relatives and extended family members living in their respective homes. They head to a village in order to have some "Masti" as usual but end up trapped in an haunted mansion that is occupied by the ghost of a sex starved woman who had died a Virgin.!

The director Indra Kumar keeps the run time at barely two hours which is a big relief and there are not too many unnecessary sub plots thrown in which makes it easier to identify with what is happening on screen. Being an "adult comedy" there are far too many below the belt crude jokes including a lot of stale jokes which are already read in whatsapp forwards. The writers had certainly run out of ideas and originality.

On the acting front the three musketeers Deshmukh, Oberoi and Shivadasani have been there and done that so many times earlier that there is nothing new they do here except making weird faces and vulgar gestures. It's a pain to watch a brilliant actor like Sanjay Mishra [ Masaan/ Aankhon Dekhi fame] mouthing double entendre and performing vulgar tasks. TV stand up comedian Sudesh Lahiri is hilarious as a villager aptly named "Ramsay" in order to get the spook factor. Shreyas Talpade is another disappointment as the gigolo Babu Rangeela.

The women are projected as sex objects and have to only appear sexually desirable in the film , worse their roles are painstakingly regressive in nature. Only Urvashi Rautela is impressive because of her spotless beauty and generously well endowed vital stats. The three wives to the three heroes are mere sex thimbles playing brainless doormats. Starlet Sonali Raut plays Deshmukh's sultry maid suggestively named "Shiney".

The Censor Board who raised an alarm during "Udta Punjab" seems to have slept while screening this Vulgar fare where the female anatomy is unapologetically compared with fruits/Sports equipments/Chicken items/Pakoda etc. All the female characters are used as glorified sex bimbettes, even a senior citizen like Usha Nadkarni has to go through an uncomfortable "rape attempt" and later a Sex escapade under a table with a Horny Baba. Producer Ektaa Kapoor seems to have hit the lowest possible denominator in order to cater to the franchise loyalists.

The director was once famous for hiking the Box Office scores with a hattric of Madhuri Dixit hits like Dil, Beta & Raja but now he's only downsizing the stature with the 'Masti' series. In case of a mindless, senseless and over the top sex comedy fans this is a must watch, otherwise give it a miss and you won't miss anything.
