JAWAAN (2023) : review

And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted ...

The unforgettable First Love !!

ती सध्या काय करते (2017)

Directed By: Satish Rajawade

Cast: Ankush Chaudhary, Tejashree Pradhan, Urmila Lothar, Sanjay Mone, Tushar Dalvi, Sukanya Kulkarni, Abhinay Berde, Anuradha and Arya Ambekar.

Finally the Marathi cinema is coming of age. Last year the industry experienced it's first major blockbuster Sairaat paving way for unconventional subjects backed with melodious music & new faces. "Ti Sadhya Kay Karte" is a simple and sweet love story.

Anurag [ Chaudhary] is a successful Architect living a happy life with his family until he goes for his high school reunion where he meets his old friends and while reminiscing his teenage memories faces the roller coaster past journey of his first love. Thereafter he meets his ex flame and thereon begins a sensitive and emotional dilemma of confessions, tribulations & unfolding of unspoken feelings.

The entire flashback involving a younger Anurag [ Berde] and his constant confusion about falling in and out of love is very beautifully handled by the Director. The innocence and purity of First Love is conceptualised & portrayed very well. Instead of infusing over dramatic or hyper emotional sequences, Rajawade has used humour and sensitivity in most of the scenes involving Berde.

The excellent direction is backed by a strong screenplay. Unfortunately a sloppy editing & inconsistent music are a major letdown down yet the sweet saccharine vocals of Rohit Raut, Hrishikesh Ranade & Arya Ambekar are a treat for the ears.

On the acting front Ankush Chaudhary has played similar characters in his long career & fits the bill perfectly, Tejashree Pradhan with a pencil thin frame is just about okay, Urmila is more impressive in a smaller yet pivotal role. Both Berde and Ambekar score high in their acting debut, the former a fantastic mixture of a chocolate boy & a comedian has a very good grip over his dialogue delivery & spontaneous acting. Ambekar exudes the required innocence and naivete and sings like an nightingale.

Rajawade has undoubtedly put in sincere efforts in directing a simple sweet love story & clearly has a winner, the biggest USP of the movie being it's simplicity & Slice of Life Approach in its narrative.
