JAWAAN (2023) : review

Image
And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted from Kaml

TAPSEE v/s KANGANA: Who is your curly favourite?

Twitter explodes! Nowadays it’s all about having virtual online spat amongst celebrities. Whether you are an A lister or a wannabe starlet (or starlings whatever you call them) you are “in the news” if you announce your Twitter war arrival! So what about non entities like me who ain’t there on Twitter, just relax and enjoy the virtual war !

Kangana and Tapsee are two Bollywood celebrities who seem to have an opinion about almost everything, whether it’s their own field of acting or politics, science, current affairs, environment blah blah black sheep etc. And they make sure they’ve an difference of opinion between each other, always make sure they do.

So what’s common between these two curly haired talented Bollywood heroines? They are born in the same year, whoa! So they are the same age albeit different upbringing and background. Both are known for playing strong feminist roles in the movies, good good. And both are considered straightforward and outspoken. Very very good. The differences? While one is left the other is right, referring to the wings here.

So Kangana has had no formal education, by her own admission she didn’t complete her studies whereas Tapsee is a degree holder an engineer to be precise. In a country obsessed with grades and the English language that’s a big achievement! Advantage Tapsee. But Kangana has won three national awards and Tapsee none, just a critics award from Filmfare. Sigh ! Advantage Kangana here. While both are known more for acting than glamour, awards do make a big difference. Double double advantage Kangana.

Support from public, media and colleagues? The public at large has a better fan base for Kangana considering she’s an A list actress second highest paid after Deepika Padukone. While Tapsee has her own fan base though it’s not close to Kangana’s humongous fan following. The media supports Tapsee whole heartedly leaving only a yelling from its lungs republic TV to support the modern day Rani Kangana. Colleagues are divided with the political affiliations at large, congress supporters root for Tapsee while bjp lovers worship Kangana. So who’s better really?

Now strictly my analysis and personal opinion, both Tapsee and Kangana are highly mediocre actors, phew! How dare I say that? My opinion really, why should I suck up to public opinion about these highly overrated actors? Both are repetitive, expressionless, very bad at dialogue delivery, rely on physical mannerisms and strong dialogues. That’s not great acting. Kangana milks the feminist angle playing the same women empowering (bollywoodish style) roles while Tapsee relies on courtroom dramas check Pink, Mulk, Badla, Thappad, the Kanoon Ka Kathghara is Tapsee’s primary prop to “act”. Take away Kangana’s “fake feminism” and Tapsee’s “Court room” and they’re left with zilch. Both are sailing in the same boat of monotonous repetitive school of over acting, with Kangana having an advantage of being in the Top league that’s all.

Otherwise if you are an Andh Bhakt you’ll obviously keep worshipping Kangana even if she spews venom through her crass tweets, and a loyal liberandu will ensure to blindly support Tapsee even if she appears to shrewdly post her opportunist instigating tweets. Finally, both are curly and not straight, the intentions I’m referring to silly !
