Do you remember the magazine MOVIE ? Was quite popular in the 90s and then suddenly stopped circulation. It was like a bridging gap between the virgin Filmfare and the saucy Stardust. There were sensational covers where established stars as well as starlings tried to hog the attention of gossip hungry readers. Revisiting some controversial tag lines and sizzling covers.
So if you can’t take your eyes off the bohemian lass Pooja Bhatt from the above 1994 cover then kindly read the honest not so animal friendly confession by Nawab Saif Ali Khan Pataudi. In a royal pride manner he confessed to having dropped his dog from the seventh floor! And also sliced his pet parrot !!! Those were the days when the society wasn’t exactly animal friendly. Imagine an actor making such claims today and how he’ll be mercilessly trolled and labelled an inhuman butcher.
It’s a well known fact that former superstar Rajesh Khanna aka Kaka once eclipsed by the then angry young man Amitabh Bachchan, held a glorified grudge against his successor. It’s alleged they didn’t get along well and shared chilling cold vibes. After a seventeen year old exaggerated rivalry and no- talk phase they teamed up for a cover in 1990!! This was a major scoop and the magazine sold like hot cakes. Never had anybody imagined the two biggies who had been on a self imposed as well as media created rift would come together for a magazine cover. That aside, the cover also boasted of a sensational family discord in sex symbol Kimi Katkar’s home. Katkar’s mother Tina Misqueta provided generous fodder to the magazine by giving a no holds barred interview disowning her star daughter.
You can’t take your eyes off sexy Pooja Bhatt on this cover. She dared to appear in her birthday suit in her birthday month. This was her 21st birthday celebration and the magazine had a ball selling copies like hot cakes. There was also a foolish statement by ace superstar Govinda where he ridiculed newcomers Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgun challenging them as to how long they’ll last in the industry. Well, Shahrukh consolidated the number one position and stayed firm in that role for almost fifteen years, Devgun is still going strong having survived for three whole decades while the challenger, poor Govinda fizzled out after giving multiple box office hits. No, the cover isn’t controversial. Future superstar Salman Bhoi looks dapper and decent. It’s the chauvinistic statement by the then number one mega star Amitabh that will give you the creeps. In an interview he unapologetically claimed that “Rape is inevitable, lie back and enjoy it”. Hard to believe that an educated, well brought up and highly civilised superstar could make a disgustingly creepy statement like that. Thankfully for him there was no social media trolling those days and this went unnoticed or maybe deliberately ignored by his loyal followers at that time. But it did resurface during the MeToo phase in 2019 when this cover was republished and made viral on social media to expose Big B’s double standards and regressive views.
Now now, it’s common in Bollywood to make statements, confessions etc and then claim “oh we were misquoted”, almost all big stars have been there and done that. Nothing new, it’s a given norm for a lot of film stars to go back on their statements once there is some uproar or controversy related to the same. Nevertheless this forgotten magazine did give a glimpse into the sensational lives of super stars of the good old 90s.
