JAWAAN (2023) : review

And finally the much hyped, much awaited Jawaan saw light of the day ! Big stars, big budget( humongous budget actually), big music composer, everything super large. But does it meet the expectations of the average viewer? No it goes not. Read on.  A decorated jawan locks horns with a criminal called Kaali, this is in 1986 ( the year movies like Aakhri Raasta released, just for reference). Kaali gets him eliminated and send the pregnant wife to jail. The baby born in jail grows up to become the hero (look alike of the father) and decides to avenge the misdeeds done to his innocent patriotic parents. Well, isn’t it a masaaledaar full on Bollywood- Tollywood drama subject ?  And then the director Atlee also borrows ideas and references from various retro movies, some idea from Sholay (1975) as the hero assembled a gang of jailed Qaidis in order to form a team to nab the villain, then there’s an entire episode borrowed from Dhartiputra (1993), and the basic theme is copy pasted ...

Time Travel with Siddharth Malhotra

BAAR BAAR DEKHO  [2016]

You get to travel in time in the near and not so near future with the lead actor in Baar Baar Dekho which is Bollywood's first of its kind psychological rom-com.

Director: Nitya Mehra

Cast: Siddharth Malhotra, Katrina Kaif, Ram Kapoor, Rajit Kapur, Sarika, Sagar Arya, Tahaa Shah, Sayani Gupta.

Baar Baar Dekho follows the life of a young Mathematics Professor Jay Varma[Malhotra] who is obsessed with his work and Mathematics, the obsession is so chronic that he tends to literally calculate everything happening in his life. And then one fine morning he realises he's skipped a few(or maybe quite a few) years of his precious life and reached the future where things ain't exactly as he expected or planned.

With a rich and supportive production unit comprising of big shots like Karan Johar, Ritesh Sidhwani & Farhan Akhtar the expectations from Baar Baar Dekho are undoubtedly sky high but alas the newbie director Nitya Mehra delivers a turkey. The subject of time travel has been done to death in the west but to present it in Bollywood with a touch of stereotypical Dharma Productions Wedding and Musical shenanigans is a herculean task which the Director fails to accomplish. Some of the scenes "in the future" look too unrealistic and comical making a complete mockery of a sensitive subject.

Malhotra looks sincere in Baar Baar Dekho portraying a very complex character and looks the part whether as a 30 year old or later a 46 year old, there is no doubt he's worked hard on voice modulation as well as change in body language to justify the age gap. In some scenes he uncannily resembles Amitabh Bachchan of the mid 70s era (from films like Majboor & Benaam) because of the similar tall frame and body structure.

Unfortunately he gets little to zilch support from an unimpressive laid back supporting cast. Kaif looks like a Sex Goddess fresher and prettier than ever oozing sensuality & skyrocketing the hotness quotient on screen but she's a complete disaster in scenes where she is required "to act or emote". Ram Kapoor gets on the nerves as the fat big daddy, so does Rajit Kapur playing a sober faced astrologer. The only noteworthy decent act is delivered by Sayani Gupta who performs her small but important role with aplomb.

Technically the film Baar Baar Dekho does score well with excellent cinematography and art direction but a lacklustre screenplay & haywire editing are a major letdown.

Mehra's direction starts off well with an impressive first half which keeps the viewer engrossed in the intriguing time leap on screen but a confusing and unrealistic second half drag the movie downwards towards complete boredom. Definitely not a movie which the audience would want to "Baar Baar Dekho".
