For those (like me) who hadn’t watched this web series until it won the prestigious Emmy award, it was more like a trigger to whet the appetite and arouse curiosity to find out what exactly made it win big ? Must agree, it was well deserved.
Based on the real life crime committed in Delhi where a young boy and girl were robbed and abused in a moving bus and the girl was gang raped and brutally tortured, a case that made headlines and evoked public outrage. This web-series is without a doubt the best cinematic representation of the horrifying crime. Mehta’s brilliant direction ensures the series gets a realistic depiction and do not wither away into the documentary mode. For a crime that involved rape and torture the director has not used any graphic violence or sexual content, the horror is verbally communicated and it hits you hard as a viewer. We’ve a really sensitive and dependable director in Mehta from whom we need to expect some even better projects in the future. The series follows the week long detailed account of the timeline from the horrific night of the crime till the final accused was nabbed. With seven episodes this is one of those rare webseries that makes you feel why did it end, you feel like following the investigative journey and be a part of the fight for justice. One gets an insight into the lives of the investigating officers, you also invariably get to experience the psyche of the prime accused. Mehta’s biggest victory is his mastery in making the on screen proceedings engaging enough to hold the viewer’s undivided attention and interest throughout. And it helps that the performances look so real, Rajesh Tailang acts with such effortless ease that you get bowled over by his consummate act. Shefali Chhaya who is mostly wasted in inconsequential Bollywood mommy roles gets a difficult role of the ‘Madam Sir’ that she plays with that ‘getting into the skin of the character’ expertise. The supporting actors don’t look like actors they either look like the investigating officers or the criminals whatever role they’re portraying, great effort by the casting director.
Realistic, hard hitting, thought provoking, and exceptionally well directed, we need more series like Delhi Crime, it’s okay to get lost in fantasy with candy floss and comedy, but it’s so necessary to face reality specially when it hits you so hard in the face!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
